Oceanographers learn a lot from tracking the junk that we drop into the seven seas. In particular, when a shipwreck releases buoyant cargo, it can serve as a useful marker for years as it drifts with the currents. Tennis shoes, hockey gloves, Lego pieces . . . But perhaps the most appropriate escapees of all time are the plastic floaty toys - including, yes, yellow duckies! - that went overboard in mid-Pacific in 1992 and are now reaching England.
